Winter Storm Leon has not just shut down schools across the Wiregrass. It has also forced local high schools to cancel and reschedule key area basketball games.
The Pike County Bulldogs were scheduled to play the Abbeville Yellow Jackets in their final area game of the season on Tuesday in Brundidge. The weather prevented the game from happening. The game has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. today.
The game is important for the Bulldogs (2-3) as the game will determine the bottom seed in Class 3A Area 4 basketball tournament. Abbeville (1-4) has the chance to steal the third seed away from the Bulldogs with a win. The loser of today’s game will play host Barbour County in the first round of the area tournament.
If Pike County wins, they could climb as high as the second seed. A win for the Bulldogs will see them play Montgomery Catholic in the area tournament at Barbour County.
Last time the Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs met, Pike County walked away with a decisive 68-48 win.
The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots also found themselves iced out of important area matchups. Both the boys and girls were supposed to begin regional tournament play at Macon-East on Thursday. When the weather did not cooperate, the games were moved to Friday.
The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots will play the top-ranked Glenwood Gators at 12:15 p.m. on Friday at Macon-East. The Pike Liberal Arts Lady Patriots will play the second-ranked Lee Scott Academy Lady Warriors at 5 p.m.
Both Charles Henderson teams were schedule to travel to Dothan to take on the Dothan High School Tigers on Thursday. The games were canceled due to inclement weather. No make-up date has been announced, and, since the games are not area games, it is not anticipated that they will be played.
Goshen had planned to play Geneva County on the road on Thursday and Ariton on Friday. The Ariton game has been moved to Saturday.
