Goshen knocks off Providence on Senior Night

Johnny Mitchell doesn’t care when his team scores points; he just wants them to do it.

The Goshen Eagles jumped out to a big first quarter lead, with the help of three pointers on four consecutive possessions, to put the Providence Eagles in the rear view mirror the rest of the night, en route to a 62-51 win.

“We shot the ball really, really well all night,” said Mitchell. “I didn’t know if that would be the case, being the first night in the new gym in long time. But the guys must have liked the atmosphere and felt the energy, because they shot it well all night long.”

Goshen went on an 18-2 run to open the contest, and picked up threes from Zach Alford, Deangelo Orum and Quay Simmons in the first quarter.

Simmons and Orum would each hit another shot from downtown in the second quarter to give the Eagles a big halftime lead.

“People say you when games in the fourth quarter, but that’s not always the case,” Mitchell said. “Those buckets count the same in the first as the do in the fourth. We were able to get them to fall early, and that was the difference in the ball game.”

Goshen had three players score in double figures.

Quay Simmons led the Eagles with 15 points, while Orum added 12 and Stevie Rodgers scored 10.

Mitchell and the Eagles will face the New Brockton Gamecocks in the first round of the area tournament on Friday in Elba.

Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
