The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans had little trouble dispatching Ashford to claim the Class 4A Area 3 title for the second consecutive year. The Lady Trojans beat the Yellow Jackets 60-17 in front of a large crowd at Betty Wagoner Hall.
The Lady Trojans actually trailed 4-2 early in the game, but Charles Henderson scored the next 22 points to effectively put the game out of reach by the middle of the second quarter. Alexis Jones and India Blakely led the charge in the first half for Charles Henderson, scoring 11 and eight points respectively.
Ashford had trouble solving the Lady Trojans’ pressing frantic, defense. Charles Henderson also dominated the Yellow Jackets on the boards, especially the offensive glass, outrebounding Ashford by 33 on the night.
The game was all but over at halftime with the Lady Trojans leading 38-9 at the break.
Blakely led the way for the Lady Trojans with 17 points. Jones added 13.
Charles Henderson head coach Dyneshia Jones described the win as a “confidence booster” for her team. “Winning the area title is a big confidence booster for the girls,” Jones said. “It shows how hard they’ve worked all season. It proves that all the hard work we put in this year has paid off.”
The win means that the Lady Trojans will host the loser of today’s Wilcox Central v. Hillcrest-Evergreen game on Thursday. Jones said her team still has a lot to work on. “We need to work on everything,” Jones said. “I don’t know too much about the teams we might be playing, but that doesn’t matter. We just need to do what we’re supposed to do–play Charles Henderson basketball.”
After the game, India Blakely, Alexis Jones and Ashanti Burks were named to the all-tournament team.
