The last 12 months have been nothing short of amazing for the sports teams at Charles Henderson High School.

Just think about it.

In the past 365 days, the Trojans have competed in two state championship contests, advanced to the final 12 in softball, captured five area titles and sent both basketball teams to the regional tournament.

The CHHS soccer team also turned in a stout season in 2013.

Ask almost any sports fan or coach and they will more than likely tell you that talent, like everything else, comes and goes in cycles.

Pike County has seen it first hand with sports dominance in the late 1980s, and then resurgence in the middle of the first decade of the new millennium.

But what the school, sports teams, coaches and players have been able to do is simply astounding when you sit back and look at it.

Charles Henderson has gone from a mid-major in the world of high school athletics to a state power.

Yes, the move down to the 4A classification might have helped this happen, but it is not the main reason or even a large percentage of the reason why.

I have had the pleasure of sideline seats to nearly all of the Trojan sporting events in the past year, and I have seen first hand what goes on behind the scenes.

The coaches, especially strength coach Adam Helms, get the most out of each individual, and in return the individuals come together to make some dang fine ball clubs.

The marquee in front of the school used to read “CHHS…where champions are made.”

No matter if you are a fan of the Trojans or a rival, you can’t deny that isn’t the case.

The numbers speak for themselves.

As baseball and softball season are in their infancy, and the Lady Trojan basketball team is on the break of state title run of their own, it looks like the Trojans will keep on winning.

And keep adding more gold and bronze to the orange and blue trophy case.
