Troy Post 70 19u team off to fast start, looking for more wins

Troy Post 70 head coach John Rushing said it was a typical opening weekend.

The 19-and-under team picked up three wins in its first tournament of the season, but Rushing said there is still plenty of work to do.

“It was a pretty good weekend all in all,” Rushing said. “We won three game and tied the last one we played, and we really should have played better. We got behind early in every game we played, but the kids battled back and got the job done.”

The 19u team in comprised of college-bound, or soon-to-be, baseball players from around southeast Alabama. Despite the robust amount of talent on the roster, Rushing said his team lacks a dominant pitcher.

“We don’t have what you might call a top-of-the-line pitching staff, but we have quite a few guys that have been great role players on their high school teams,” Rushing said. “They have all been in situations like this before, so they are big in games like we played over the weekend.”

Post 70 will play its first games inside the friendly confines of its home field, Troy University’s Riddle-Pace Field, Tuesday night.

Troy will competed against the Wiregrass Indians.

“The team we are playing Tuesday was in the 17-and-under tournament but they aren’t the typical 17u team,” Rushing said. “They were in the 17-and-under championship game here last week, so they are a very quality team. We will have to take care of our business and play our game well.”

First pitch for Post 70’s home opener is for 6:30 p.m.
