A slow start hurt the comeback chances of the Troy Ponytails in their first district game. Inaccurate throws and pitching was a major problem for the all-stars. A combined 37 runs were scored in a back and forth game.
“We came out the slow and I was hoping we wouldn’t because I knew it would be hard to come back from,” head coach David Maulden said. “Overall they never gave up and they had a lot of fight in them.”
Going into the second inning the girls were down 8-0 against Crenshaw County, but generated quick offense. Mallory Clifton fueled the comeback with a RBI double to left field.
Runs kept pouring in and the Ponytails took a short 9-8 lead after a wild pitch thrown by Crenshaw County’s Elizabeth Jones.
“I want to keep the girls up and let them know they can hit with anybody and we are going to keep our bats hot and wrap them up tonight,” he said. The main thing he wants his team to improve on is team defense.
He said the team has to remember the fundamentals of throw and catching. He noticed some of the girls were cheating the throws and not following all the way through.
“We have to understand stepping and throwing and concentrating on catching,” he said.
He told the girls that they were down 8-0 and rallied back. He said they could do it again and compete with the best of them going into tomorrow.
The Ponytails gave up three runs in the top of the sixth inning losing the game 20-17.
The Ponytails will take on Greenville tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at the Troy Sportsplex.
