Members of the community voiced their objections to two zoning variance requests on Thursday.
The Board of Adjustments denied three of five requests presented at its monthly meeting.
The first denied case was a request for a lot area and lot width variance to allow the construction of a single-family home at 102 Homewood Avenue located in the R1: Low Density Residential Zoning District.
Residents of Homewood Avenue expressed their concern and disapproval of the request. Board Chairman Jack Norton read a letter from Homewood Avenue residents Claude and Debra McQueen that expressed “deep concern that it would bring the value of our home down and that our freedom would be infringed upon—we strive for safety.”
Members of the audience from Homewood Avenue shared the opinion that the lot would be too small and not leave enough space between the neighboring houses.
Councilman Greg Meeks said that he had received several calls from his constituents against the proposed construction.
“A normal lot is 1,500 feet,” Meeks said. “That lot has about 20 percent less width across.”
The board members voted unanimously to deny the variance.
Brittany Singleton also made a request for special exception to allow the placement of a mobile home on a parcel of land that is approximately 11 acres located on U.S. Highway 29 South and Radio Station Roa in the RR: Reserved Residential Zoning District.
Jerry Jinright presented a petition of 43 signatures of residents from the area who opposed the project. “We want to keep the value of our homes and land,” Jinright said.
The board also denied a request for variances to allow the placement of a mobile home as a rear dwelling behind 409 Trojan Terrace located in the C4: Highway Commerical Zoning District.
In other business, the board:
Approved a request by Gladys and Felipe Mendez to allow the operation of a lawn-care home-based business at 113 McNeil St.
Approved a request for variance from sign regulations to allow additional wall signs at the renovated Wendy’s on U.S. 231 South.
