As part of a statewide effort to keep Alabama clean, Pike County cities are planning some projects of their own.

The town of Goshen is planning its cleanup date for the first weekend of the state PALS (People Against A Littered State) Don’t Drop it on Alabama Cleanup Week this Saturday.

The city of Troy plans to tackle litter on Wednesday, April 21.

Goshen Town Clerk Traci Shaver said the town invites everyone to come out Saturday between 8 a.m. and noon for a city-wide cleanup project, the second Goshen has done.

“We’re just asking any group that volunteers with any organizations to meet at Town Hall,” she said.

If good old-fashioned service isn’t enough to encourage local groups to come out, the town is offering a little incentive.

“We have a $250 check, and we will break it down for the three groups with the highest participation,” Shaver said.

The PALS statewide clean up will go from April 17 to 24, and cities across the state are encouraged to take part in keeping the streets litter free.

Shaver said last year was the first time Goshen held a town-wide cleanup, and she hopes for an even bigger success this year.

The cleanup will commence at 8 a.m., but Shaver said people can come and go as they please.

She will be stationed at Town Hall during those four hours and can guide people to the cleanup as they come.

“Last year we went a little beyond city limits and worked our way in,” she said.

Shaver said those who reside outside Goshen’s city limits are encouraged to work in their areas and cleanup the rest of the town, as well.

The city of Troy’s cleanup is part of its monthly routine. The Anti-Litter Group led-project will focus on cleaning District 4.

Meredith McLendon, chair of the Anti-Litter Committee, said the group encourages all residents who want to participate in the cleanup to gather at the BP Station at the intersection of Shellhorn Road and U.S. Highway 231 at 9 a.m. The group will clean down Shellhorn from 9 a.m. to noon.
