C.C. Matthews, owner and trainer at Trinity Fitness in Troy, may not be chosen the next trainer on “The Biggest Loser” television reality show but he’s not a loser.
Not when you consider that the field of competitors was 1,280 and he “survived” four rounds of interviews.
“The Biggest Loser” features obese people competing to win a cash prize by losing the highest percentage of weight relative to their initial weight. And, to lose weight the right way, a personal trainer is a must for the guys and the gals.
When Matthews learned in March that the popular reality show would be hiring a new personal trainer, he thought that would be something that would be challenging, personally satisfying and a lot of fun. He knew the odds were against him but somebody was going to get the nod.
Matthews participated in the first selection round in California and then participated in two telephone interviews. Then, he was invited to participate in the final round of 36.
“That round was very intense,” Matthews said Friday afternoon. “Just to be in that group was a real honor. It was made up of elite trainers from around the world – the UK, Australia, everywhere.”
That phase of the competition included a 90-minute interview and 45 minutes before the cameras interacting with people and in different training situations.
“They really drilled you to see what you are made of,” Matthews said. “It was very intense but I enjoyed being a part of it. It was an honor just to be there. The whole experience was a lot of fun and very positive.”
Matthews said that, if his phone has not rung by now, it probably won’t.
“I don’t know how many trainers will be selected,” he said. “It could be one, two or four. It was be a real challenge to be one of them but I don’t think it’s my turn.”
However, Matthews said he was told that his file will be kept and that other opportunities could come down the road.
“It was a great experience and I’m honored to have made as far as I did,” he said. “But
I’m back in Troy. Troy stuck with me. I’m in full swing.”
