Representatives of two local banks are warning customers of several telemarketing scams seeking to obtain debit card information.
Troy Bank & Trust personnel said Friday morning that several scams involving fraudulent telephone calls, text messages and e-mails being sent to TB&T customers and non-customers.
Those who receive the calls, texts and emails are being told that their debit card has been blocked and to press 1 to proceed. The call, text or e-mail will then ask the customer to enter their card number, expiration date and PIN.
Representatives of Regions Bank received reports of the same scam on Friday morning.
Lt. Bryan Weed of the Troy Police Department said the department had received reports of the scam, and cautioned that customers who receive suspicious calls should reach out immediately to their financial institution, rather than respond to the caller.
“Be assured that Troy Bank & Trust would never ask a customer for their debit card PIN. Customers should never give anyone their debit card number by phone or e-mail unless they (the customer) has initiated the call with a legitimate merchant”, said Amy Johnson McManigle, manager of the TB&T Electronic Banking Department.
“Our debit cards are monitored for fraud 24/7 and customers may get called to verify debit card activity, but customers will never be asked to enter or to give us their account numbers or PIN numbers,” said McManigle. “If you receive one of these fraudulent calls, simply hang up the phone and/or delete the text or e-mail.” If a customer feels their card has been compromised, customer needs to call the TB&T Lost or Stolen Card line at 1-800-500-1044 as soon as possible.
