The Pike County Fairgrounds are a-buzz with activity as the opening day for the 2014 Pike County Fair nears.

James Henderson, a member of the sponsoring Troy Shrine Club, said the doors of the Fairgrounds will be open today through Sunday for the set up of booths and displays for the Pike County Fair that opens at 6 p.m. Tuesday and will run nightly through Saturday, Oct. 4.

“We’ll be open today and we’ll open the doors at 8: 30 Saturday morning and keep them open as long as people need to get in to set up their booths,” Henderson said. “We’ll open again at 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon and close up at 5 p.m. At that time, everything should be in place for the judging to begin on Monday.”

Henderson said the Shriners have a box of ribbons to be awarded and hopes are to have a lot of entries in the different categories.

“We have some prize money to give, too, so we encourage everybody to enter the Pike County Fair exhibits,” Henderson said. “And, of course, we invite everybody out to the Pike County Fair next week, Tuesday through Saturday nights.”

Henderson said the Midway will be a fun and exciting one with rides for all ages.

“We’ve got the same Midway back from last year and it was a good one,” he said. “The Midway will have everything from the Merry-Go-Round and the kiddy cars to the big rides like the Ring O’ Fire and Ferris Wheel. It will be fun and exciting.”

Admission to the Pike County Fair is $6 for adults and $4 for ages 6-11. Children under five are admitted free.

“You can buy armbands for $15 and have unlimited riding,” Henderson said. “Wednesday night is buy-one, get-one free and that’s a goof deal. You pay for one armband and the other one is free.”

In addition to great exhibits, a great Midway and a variety of traditional carnival foods, the 2014 Pike County Fair features nightly entertainment by some of the area’s most popular groups.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, the Benton Brothers will be featured in the Banks Bluegrass Showcase. The Alcazar Shrine Band will be featured at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The SheBANG! Cloggers will be on stage at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, with the Ryan Alan Project following at 7:30.

The Johnny Barron Waterfall Children’s Band Showcase will entertain at 8 p.m. Friday and the Perfection and Grace Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Henderson said CB the Clown will be on the Midway each night to delight the young and young at heart.
