It was a night to forget for the Goshen girl’s basketball team.

After rattling off two-straight wins against Zion Chapel and Pike County in the first two rounds of the Goshen Holiday Tournament on Thursday and Friday night, the Eagles found themselves riding a wave of momentum into the tournament championship game against Luverne Saturday night.

But from the moment the two teams tipped off, it was evident the Eagles’ good fortune had run out as the Tigers ran over Goshen, 41-6.

Luverne’s rout over the Eagles began almost immediately Saturday, as the Tigers jumped out to a 13-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Goshen was almost held scoreless in the first quarter, but Shamiya Griffin scored on a turnaround jumper from the top of the key to put the Eagles on the board with just 47 seconds left in the game’s opening quarter.

Griffin’s basket was not able to spark any more offense, though, as the Eagles were held scoreless in the second quarter.

And Luverne, who took advantage of sloppy passes and missed open shots by the Eagles, jumped out to a 27-2 halftime lead.

Going into the second half, it was much of the same from the Goshen offense.

Despite baskets by Bre Griffin and Shyanne Tillery in the third, Goshen continued to sputter, as they scored just four in the third quarter and no points in the fourth.

Marlianne Alford led the Tigers with 12 points on the night.
