The Troy men’s baseball team lost to St. Louis in dramatic, walk-off fashion, 2-1 Friday afternoon at the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, Fla.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, St. Louis catcher Jake Henson singled to left-center field, scoring the Biliken’s winning run.
Former Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Marc Skinner (0-1) held his own on the mound in the game’s final inning, striking out St. Louis’ first batter in the ninth before picking off another Biliken runner for the second out.
But with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Skinner hit a batter and walked another before allowing the walk-off single to Henson.
Troy (3-2) freshman pitcher Corey Childress got the start Friday, pitching seven innings and holding St. Louis hitless through five of those innings.
For the game, Childress allowed one run and three hits.
St. Louis (2-3) starting pitcher Josh Moore matched wits with Childress, allowing one run on five hits through eight innings of the game.
Zach Girrens (1-0) came in for relief of Moore, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win.
Deadlocked at 0-0, St. Louis struck first when Henson brought in the Bilikens’ first runner on a two-out double that scored the runner from first base.
In the eighth inning, Troy tied the game at 1 after Trevin Hall singled with two outs then quickly stole second. Tripp Calhoun then hit a single through the right side of the infield to score the run.
In the top of the ninth, Troy had a chance to take the lead with a pinch runner on third base with two outs. But a fly out ended the inning, keeping the game tied before losing in the bottom of the ninth.
