The Pike Liberal Arts softball team strung together five-straight wins on its way to winning the Edgewood Tournament championship with a 10-6 win over Autauga Academy on Saturday.
After getting out to a commanding 10-1 lead over the Generals, the Lady Patriots had to hold on for the win after Autuaga rallied to score five runs in the final inning.
Pike jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the game thanks to a Sam Yarbrough RBI double that scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning and a bunt from Yarbrough that scored two more runs in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth, Autauga scored its first run of the game on a bunt single but failed to score again until the seventh inning.
After the Generals got on the board, Pike came back with a big four-run sixth inning to increase its lead to 10-1.
But in the top of the seventh, with just one more chance to take the lead, Autauga put together a five-run seventh, but Pike ended the Generals’ comeback just before they could challenge the lead.
Bailey Rushing led the Patriots in the game with three RBIs on three hits and also earned the win from the pitching circle Saturday, striking out five runs in five innings pitched.
For her efforts, Rushing was named the Edgewood Tournament MVP.
