For the third-straight week, two Troy-area teams are nestled nicely in the upper echelon of the ASWA baseball and softball rankings.

In the third edition of the 2015 season’s ASWA rankings, Charles Henderson baseball and Pike Liberal Arts softball have made appearances once again at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in their respective classes.

The Trojans, fresh off of a stint in the Gulf Shores that saw the team finish 3-1 at the Gulf Coast Classic, are sitting pretty at No. 1 in Class 5A with a 23-2 overall record on the year.

This is the 14th consecutive time Charles Henderson has sat atop the 5A rankings as the No. 1 team, dating back to last season.

The two-time defending state champions suffered just their second loss of the season this week in the Gulf Coast Classic to Valley View (Ark.), but rebounded to defeat Dothan to finish out the week at 3-1.

The Trojans also defeated 7A Foley earlier in the week.

“I thought we played tremendous defense and pitched very well,” head coach Derek Irons said. “Cole Wilson and Jason Fleming in game one and Hunter Reeves in game two we were really good on the mound and on defense. We just didn’t have our best day swinging the bats.”

In AISA, Pike Liberal Arts softball found itself ranked No. 2 for the third-straight week.

The Lady Patriots, who sit at 22-7 on the season, are enjoying a week of rest coming off of a busy first half of the season.

The Patriots have been hot offensively, averaging just over eight runs a game up to this point in the season.

“The girls play really well together,” Pike Liberal Arts head coach Allie Park said. “If somebody is not on, someone else steps in.”

The Lady Patriots find themselves just behind AISA No. 1 Macon-East, Pike’s heated rival.

The Knights sit at 32-3 on the season, with one of their losses coming at the hands of Pike.

The two teams have met four times already this season, with Macon-East leading the series 3-1.

The Lady Patriots, who have been off all week, will return to the field March 30 against Abbeville.

And Charles Henderson softball, which found itself at No. 9 in last week’s 5A rankings, dropped out of the rankings after a loss to Eufaula one week ago.

The Lady Trojans will host Elba on March 31.
