The Goshen Eagles traveled to face the Elba Tigers in a matchup that baseball head coach Robby Kinsaul anticipated to be a good matchup, and he was right.

The Eagles traveled to Elba and came home with a 12-10 win against the Tigers. Kinsaul said the two teams had been able to put the ball in play well throughout the games.

Both teams putting the ball in play really drove the score up,” Kinsaul said. “We didn’t do that the first two innings, but we came back. We were down 3-0 and scored four in the top of the fourth, and they tied it up in the fifth. In the fifth we were losing 5-4 and scored a run in the top of the sixth to make it 5-5.”

Kinsaul said the team had gone back and forth like that for several innings before Elba was able to get a three-run lead on the Eagles until Kinsaul said they were able to score seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, securing their victory despite the Tigers scoring two more runs.

On the mound for the Eagles was Ty Witherington and Bryant Stephens, who both had great showing for the Eagles.

“Ty Witherington pitched an outstanding game,” Kinsaul said. “He kept us in the ball game. We made a lot of plays defensively. Tyler Phillips had two hits on the base. Jabronski Williams had two hits on the base. Hunter Williams had two hits. Bryan Redmon had two hits, and he had two doubles.”

Kinsaul said one of Redmon’s double came in clutch for the Eagles as the team had two outs.

“We had two outs and he hit a shot in the right center field with a bases clearing doubles,” Kinsaul said. “That was a huge at bat with two outs.”

Kinsaul also said Bailey Singleton, Braxton Stewart, JP Steele and Witherington all had one hit a piece.

Kinsaul said tonight’s win game from determination.

“Our kids compete, and they play for each other,” Kinsaul said. “It was evident in that game. They could have easily thrown the towel in when they got down, and that’s one thing that our team has matured about. In years past they wouldn’t have tried. They would just thought the game was over with, but they didn’t do that. That determination was there with them today.”

Kinsaul said the team still had some things to work on before the season was through.

“We had some throws throwing to third base that got away from the third baseman twice and let them score,” Kinsaul said. “I do not mind them being aggressive because that’s the way I coach and that’s the way I want them to play. Our catcher hunter Williams, he’s a tenth grader, has a very good arm he just didn’t make some of those throws.”

The Eagles are set to face the Tigers again today starting at 4 o’clock in Goshen, and Kinsaul said the team was aware that no two games are alike.

“I try to tell them all the time that no two games are alike,” Kinsaul said. “The game tomorrow won’t be like it was today. We’ll have to play seven innings again. We’re going to have to play smart and pay attention to pitches. I’m just proud for our guys. They deserve it.”
