Most people decorate their homes and their lawns for Christmas, but Myrtle Tolbert goes above and beyond to decorate for Easter.

It is traditional to see a cross, or three crosses, but she also puts lights on the cross.

“The more I looked at it, the more I began to get carried away in the Spirit,” Tolbert said. “Something told me to do the white lights to represent the water and let it run from it. The red lights would be for the blood.”

Tolbert, a member of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, campus one, said that she originally set up the crosses for Christmas, but she put them back out for Easter, and has done so for the past five years.

“I know that Jesus died on that cross for all mankind,” Tolbert said. “It’s a reminder to me when I light it up.

“Easter is not about getting new clothes,” she said. Tolbert uses her crosses and lights to share the story of the crucifixion through her display on West Walnut Street. She leaves the lights shining from Good Friday until Easter has passed.

“God just put it in my spirit to tell the world that He died but is alive,” she said.
