The Pike Liberal Arts Lady Patriots edged area rival Glenwood 9-8 on Tuesday, ending their regular home season with a much-welcomed win.

“Glenwood is a good team,” said head coach Allie Park said. “They really know how to hit the ball well. They have a strong defense. They are neck and neck with us. They were ranked behind us this season, so they’re a good rival team for us to be able to come in and beat.”

Senior shortstop Kayla Benton went two for four at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Pitcher Bailey Rushing had two singles, senior catcher Amberlyn Baker went two for two with two walks and an RBI and Sam Yarborough went one for two with an RBI double, but Park said a clutch sac fly in the sixth inning from Amanda Finlayson.

“She was two for four with two RBIs, two singles and a sac fly in the sixth inning, which was outstanding,” Park said. “It was a big day for her. I had a lot of confidence in her bat today.”

Rushing and Yarborough both had time in the circle for the Lady Pats and Park commended them both on their work Wednesday.

“Both of them were outstanding, pitching wise,” Park said. “AB behind the plate did great. My outfield was really keeping the ball in front of them, which we’ve been working on a lot.”

Park said she would miss both Benton and Baker during the upcoming season and wished them both the best in their future endeavors.

“I’m going to be extremely, extremely upset to see them go,” Park said. “It hasn’t hit me yet because we still have some season left, but I love those girls with all my heart. We do this for the love of the game, and I think the team is a big close-knit family. It’s been a blessing to coach these girls.”

The Lady Pats will face Coosa Valley on the road today.
