With a heart for lending a helping hand, Sandre Curry set out to help the elderly when she moved back to Troy after retiring from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Since moving back home five years ago, Curry has stayed busy transporting people to Montgomery and Dothan to doctor’s appointments.

“I grew up here and I know these people and this community and that is why I am dedicated to helping out anyway I can,” she said.

Curry volunteers to transport her family members and neighbors to their appointments, and sometimes people find out she does it through word of mouth.

She said it is her duty to give back to people in her community because that is her job as the missionary department president at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She was baptized when she was 8 years old, and she was eager to get back into the church.

Curry enjoys visiting nursing homes and the sick and shut-ins, and she takes the most pride in delivering Christmas baskets for the missionary department.

“I feel good about being able to do what I can for the people in my community, because I would want someone to help out my mother or father,” she said.

“I know all of my neighbors and it’s an excellent neighborhood,” she said of Curry Circle. “Everybody likes rocking on my porch.”
