Troy Belles earn 19-0 shutout in first outing of Sub-District tourney

With the Troy Belles relying heavily on experience and talent heading into this summer’s round of tournaments, the Belles’ got a running start with a 19-0 win against Eufaula Friday night.

The Belles used a steady barrage of hitting and consistent pitching on their way to a convincing 19-0 win in five innings over Eufaula with three pitchers sharing the circle Friday night.

Molly-Kate Sanders and Brooke Bennett both pitched two scoreless innings, while Maggie Phelps finished off the final inning and the game for the Belles.

Sanders not only stood out in the pitching circle, she garnered attention offensively getting several base hits for the Belles.

Belles head coach Larry Sanders said the Belles’ offense had done all of the dirty work during the match up scoring 19 runs in just five innings, putting a solid seven runs up in the first two innings of the night.

“All the girls had good at-bats. We hit the ball really well tonight,” Belles head coach Larry Sanders said. “We need to adjust to certain pitchers, I thought the pitching tonight was a little slow. But we hit the ball really well.”

Kelly Gibson was a key player for the Belles offense hitting a total of three homeruns during the Belles brief outing.

With the win, the will Belles advance on to the winners bracket today and face Opp at 11 a.m.

Sanders said he didn’t know much about the Opp, but he said hoped the girls would be able to carry the momentum of Friday’s at-bats into today’s competition.

“We just have to keep hitting well,” Sanders said. “I don’t know much about the, they are a young team. We need to come out and do what we did tonight, hit well, be patient and run the bases the correct way.”
