The Troy City Schools Board of Education approved 10 new hires on Thursday, leaving fewer than half a dozen positions to be filled in the system.

“We have about four or five remaining, including the head baseball coach,” said Dr. Lee Hicks, superintendent. “We have a couple of positions that could be open, pending possible resignations, as well.”

Hires approved at Thursday’s called meeting include:

• Allie Park and Stephanie Gurba as teacher’s aides at Troy Elementary School. Gurba will work in the media center and Park will teach a computer lab/course, Hicks said.

• Melinda Avant, special education aide at TES.

• Calvin Scott, teacher’s aide at Charles Henderson Middle School. Hicks said Scott had worked with the band and music program previously as a long-term substitute.

• Elizabeth Hicks, special education teacher at CHMS.

• Sanchia Bennett, math teacher at CHMS.

• Emily Grant, English teacher at CHMS.

• Shelby Sikes and Adrian Jones, special education aides at Charles Henderson High School.

• Charlotte Walden, art teacher at CHHS.

The board also approved the resignation of Ashlie Hansberry, CHMS English teacher; and the transfer of Kristen Messick from CHMS math teacher to CHHS math teacher.

Cayla Whitt, who had been offered the CHHS art teacher position, declined the offer. “She received an offer in her hometown the same day we made our offer,” Hicks said.

Hicks said Park also would be an assistant softball coach. Park previously coached at Pike Liberal Arts School, where she led the 2015 softball team to the semi-finals of the Class AAA state championship.
