Water seeping through concrete floors continues to cause concern at Goshen High School.
“It’s creating a problem with the carpeting,” said Pike County Schools Superintendent Mark Bazzell. “It’s bad enough that we’ve got ServePro coming in Thursday. They will take everything out of the building, clean the carpets and treat everything in there.”
Bazzell updated members of the Pike County Board of Education about the issue on Monday. He said the cause of the problem remains a mystery, but the board is searching for a permanent solution.
“We’ve got the issue of being able to use the building resolved, but we are trying to find a solution so we don’t have to keep spending money on the same issue,” Bazzell said.
Bazzell also announced during Monday’s meeting that Wayne Teague, a state superintendent for 20 years passed away. “He fought a lot of battles for the children of Alabama,” Bazzell said.
The board approved a revised curriculum guide. Bazzell said the curriculum did not change much; however, it changed the way of determining the valedictorian, salutatorian and class rankings. Also, it changed the system for students working toward an advanced diploma.
“The students have to have a C or better to count it toward an advanced diploma,” Bazzell said. “The second time they don’t make a C or better, they have to have a mandatory meeting with their teacher, parents and counselor.”
In other business items, the board approved the revision of Policy 6.70.2, concerning vacation leave; Policy 5.65, concerning anaphylaxis preparedness and Police 3.90, concerning adult sex offenders on school property.
The board also approved a correction to the maintenance/transportation director salary schedule.
The board presented a draft of the dual enrollment and specialty program guide. The guide will specify what courses need to be taken in order to achieve an associate’s degree upon graduation.
“When parents want to know what the kids have to take for the associate degree programs, they will have something that they can look at,” Bazzell said.
In personnel items, the board accepted the resignation of Casey Moore, an English teacher at GHS.
The board approved the volunteer status of Chasidee Moultry for the dance team at Pike County High School.
The board approved the employment of Shannah Hallford Lopard as art/music teacher, Debbie LaViner as 4th grade teacher and Sharonda Hunter as special education teacher, all at Pike County Elementary School.
The board approved the employment of David Godwin as a teacher at the Alternative Learning Center.
The board also approved the employment of Benjamin Graham as a social studies teacher at Banks, but it is conditional on eligibility of a teaching certificate.
The board approved the employment of Mitchell Price as English teacher at GHS.
The position for a choral teacher at PCHS is still open.
