For the third year in a row, the City of Troy will host its annual Troy Recycles Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Lowes parking lot.

Melissa Sanders, executive director of the Keep Troy Beautiful program, said many people have come out and participated over the course of the last two years, and she hopes more will participate this year.

“We host this annually in coordination with America Recycles Day (Nov. 15),” Sanders said. “In order to get as many participants as possible and have a good weekend to do this, we try to schedule it around Troy University football games. This was the best day for most people to be in town to do this.”

The goal is to increase recycling efforts in the community. “It’s also there to help people clean up and get a lot of these items out of their yards, out of their homes so they can be recycled, like old patio furniture and stuff that is just sitting around,” Sanders said. “It helps increase recycling and gives people a one-stop drop for these items

The event allows individuals to bring a variety of items to one place for recycling, including computers, computer monitors, appliances and furniture, household items, cardboard, and more.

“If you bring a computer, we will remove the hard drive and hand it back to you for security purposes,” Sanders said. “You can go ahead and take the hard drive out if you know how to speed up the process. Spurlock will also have a trailer on site for all of the metal items like old bicycles, old metal furniture and anything like that.”

While many items will be accepted, some restrictions are in place. “Please do not bring household items such as tires, long florescent tube light blubs, no paint or wet leaking paint cans,” Sanders said. “If it’s empty and dry paint cans, we will accept those cans.”

Sanders also said that Christian Service Missions and Habitat for Humanity would be onsite to collect donations for families in need.

“They will be collecting used clothing, household items, workable appliances, building projects and tools that both organizations can use and will be greatly appreciated,” Sanders said. “Lowes is the drop off point for the plastic bags and for compact light bulbs and rechargeable batteries. We will be accepting those as well.”

Onsite shredding will be available thanks to Troy Bank & Trust and First National Bank, and Sanders said there would be no limit on materials shredded.

“Last year was the first year doing the onsite shredding service, and we had a great turnout. First National Bank and Troy Bank & Trust sponsored it last year and they’re sponsoring it again this year. There is no limit of what they can bring in,” she said.

“We will also be accepting all our normal items that we would pick up curbside or at the recycling center,” such as cardboard and numbered plastics, she said.

Sponsors include Troy Bank & Trust, City of Troy, KW Plastics, Spurlock Metals, Lowes, First National Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Christian Service Mission and Keep Troy Beautiful. “We are very thankful for our partners in this event, and we would like to thank Lowes for allowing us to do this in their parking lot each year,” Sanders said. “We invite everyone to bring their items out to donate, recycle or shred and visit with us to learn more about Keep Troy Beautiful.”
