Randall Barr was sworn in as the new police chief for the City of Troy on Wednesday.

Barr has served as captain of the patrol division since July 2010 and has more than 25 years of law enforcement experience.

“When I entered into this business, I never thought that I would be standing here today as police chief,” Barr said. “That was the furthest thing from my mind.”

Barr began his career in 1989 with the Troy State University Police Department. Barr joined the Troy Police Department in 1991, where he has served for 24 years advancing through the ranks. He served as sergeant of the patrol division, lieutenant of the patrol division and promoted to captain of the patrol division.

“I wouldn’t be here without the support of my family, friends and this town,” Barr. “This is a very humbling experience. It’s a new chapter for me and for the Troy Police Department.”

Former police chiefs Jimmy Ennis and Grady Reeves pinned Barr and Troy Mayor Jason Reeves pinned his badge.

“I didn’t think I would have the opportunity to pin the chief’s badge on anyone,” Reeves said. “We are excited about this new chapter. We are here to celebrate a new beginning. This man has outstanding character and integrity, and he is going to do a fine job leading (this department).

Reeves said that pinning Barr was a special experience because his father was a police chief.

“This is a special day for this department, and it’s a special day for the City of Troy,” Reeves said. “This is a special day for me as the son of a former police chief, it’s just a little bit different and a little bit special.”

Barr expressed his determination to uphold his oath to the city and to the department and to face all of the challenges ahead to the best of his abilities.

“There are some great challenges ahead of us,” Barr said. “I am up to those challenges. I will do everything in my power to support the success of this department.”

Barr said that the department couldn’t do what it does without the support of the community.

“The support of the community is important,” Barr said. “We can’t function without community support. We are all in this together.”

This City of Troy currently has 56 sworn officers that serve the citizens of Troy. The officers are committed to providing the highest quality service to the citizens of Troy.

“There is not doubt in my mind that the City of Troy has as fine of a police department as there is anywhere,” Reeves said.
