The strong running attack and suffocating defense of the undefeated Pike County Bulldogs hit the road tonight to play region foe Barbour County.

The Bulldogs (4-0, 2-0) enter the game with a shutout streak that extends to second half of the preseason game against Charles Henderson. Since then the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 213-0.

Despite the success, there will be no resting on laurels as long as head coach Fred Holland is on the sidelines.

“One thing I always tell the guys after the game is to enjoy it for now but be ready for your next opponent,” Holland said. “The other team doesn’t care how many points you have scored, they are trying to score on you.”

The Bulldog defense has started to turn heads around the school and the community, but Holland doesn’t like to listen to all the hype from outside sources.

“People are constantly coming up to us telling us how good we are doing,” Holland said. “One thing I always try to preach to my players is being humble. Only hard work will keep you on top.”

It’s the preaching of fundamentals, according to Holland, that is contributing to the success of the defense so far this season.

Barbour County (0-6, 0-3) comes into this game in search of their first win of the season. Although on paper this looks like a game the Bulldogs can control, it is still a region game and the Bulldogs will treat it as such.

“They are a very athletic team that likes to throw the ball a lot,” Holland said. “They can present some problems if we aren’t ready for them.”

The Bulldog offense will lean heavily on the production of their running back Deshon Cowling who has scored at least five touchdowns in back-to-back games for the Bulldogs.

Kick off between Pike County and Barbour County is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Clayton
