Construction on the $7.7 million Enzor Road connector road project for the City of Troy is scheduled to begin Nov. 1.

The city council on Wednesday awarded the contract for the project to Grady Ralls & Sons Inc., whose bid was $7.775 million.

“I’m grateful to everyone to everyone who worked to get the project to this point,” said Mayor Jason Reeves. “It’s a tremendous day for the City of Troy.”

The Enzor Road Connector Project includes 2.4 miles of new road construction. George Wallace Drive will be extended to Enzor Road and Franklin Drive will extend to Oak Park, connecting to Highway 87/167.

The project is a key component of the Publix development project, which includes the construction of a new Publix grocery store and retail developments at the intersection of George Wallace and U.S. 231.

This project is the largest road infrastructure project in the city’s history.

“The real work begins now,” Reeves said after the meeting.

The contract calls for work to begin by Nov. 1, with the project completion date set at Nov. 30, 2016.

Tim Ramsden of engineering firm CDG, Inc. said work will begin immediately to prepare for the construction project. “We’re going into one of the poorer times to do dirt work, so we need to get going as quickly as we can,” he said.

Because a large portion of the project involves undeveloped land, Reeves said he expects impact on the public to be minimal. “At some point, the public will be able to see work on all four fronts: George Wallace, Franklin Drive, Enzor Road and Oak Park,” he said.

The developers closed on the purchase of land for the Publix store and retail outlets Sept. 30. Reeves said the timeline calls for Publix to open in February 2017, and he expects work to begin at the site soon. “I think their timeline calls for construction to begin in the spring,” he said.
