A group of high school girls took service to a new level and donated 157 pairs of glasses to be taken to India.

Twilighters, established in 1954, is a group of high school girls that come together for fellowship and service. Each girl is voted in by existing members, and the group has always remained relatively small.

Chris Gilmore, Twilighters sponsor, said that the group does a project during the holidays each year, but this year they wanted to try something new.

GIlmore said that so many of the girls were participating in the shoebox Christmas project, that they wanted to incorporate a whole new project.

“We like to have philanthropy projects around the holidays, and we were looking for something new,” Gilmore said. “One of the member’s teachers told her about Virginia Hamm wanting to bring glasses on her next trip to India. We thought that would be great.”

According to Hamm, glasses are needed in many of the villages in India.

“This gift of glasses will enable men, women, boys and girls to carry out their daily activities and the read the Word of God,” Hamm said.

“The love of God is shown through this gift.”

Each Twilighter donated five pairs of glasses for Hamm to bring with her to India this fall. The group presented the glasses to Hamm Saturday night.

Gilmore said that the Twilighters’ projects each year vary because the girls choose different projects each time.

“We don’t do the same thing every year because it’s the girls’ club and they make the decision on what they want to do,” Gilmore said.

In the past, the Twilighters have donated money to the Humane Society to build the animal shelter, played bingo with senior citizens and many other service projects.
