The Troy Lady Trojans dominated their way through the Talladega County Central Thanksgiving Tournament, finishing 3-0 record with a 49-33 win over Talladega High School in the championship game.

The Lady Trojans ran through their first two opponents, Munford High School and Talladega County Central High School in dominating fashion: 55-10 then 44-10.

After starting the tournament 2-0 the Trojans matched up with Talladega, a team that made it to the state tournament a year ago.

After dominating their way through the first two games, Talladega High presented more of a challenge to the Trojans, especially on defense.

“They looked pretty good,” said Trojans head Dyneshia Jones. “You could tell by the scores on Saturday and Monday. Today (Tuesday) we played a better team. We adjusted well on defense.”

The Trojans and the Tigers battled each other in the first half and the Trojans entered the locker room with a slim lead. The second half was a different story for the Trojans, as the defense locked down and the Trojans were able to pull away with a 16-point win.

Maori Davenport led the Trojans in points per game in the tournament with 15 and also in rebounds with 10. Davenport was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

India Blakely led the team in both assists per game with six and blocks per game also with six. Blakely also led the team in steals with three per game.

The three wins during the tournament improve the Lady Trojans’ record to 4-0. The Thanksgiving tournament also gave Jones the opportunity to have her first extensive look at her 2015-2016 squad.

“We traveled nearly three hours to and from Talladega each day and they played as if they were at home,” Jones said. “They played with fire in their veins on every possession and proved a point by winning the championship. I am one proud coach.”

Jones also is able to see opportunities for improvement.

“We still need to work on everything,” Jones said. “We need to work on boxing out, and playing man defense. We struggled with man defense. That was my fault I didn’t work on that in practice. Down the road we are going to have to play more man to man, which we had to do today.”

The Lady Trojans will now turn head to the Hoover Tournament on Friday. Game time has yet to be announced.
