The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans concluded play Wednesday morning in the BallN Prep tournament in Montgomery with a 34-26 win over reigning Florida state champion Pine Forrest.
The Lady Trojans (18-1) were undefeated in the tournament and they outscored Pine Forrest 20-8 in the middle quarters of the championship game.
“They were a really good team,” said Trojans head coach Dyneshia Jones. “They were really smart players and great shooters.”
The Trojans and Eagles played a tight first quarter and after the first eight minutes of the game the Eagles held a slim 9-8 lead.
The Trojans started to pull ahead in the second quarter, fueled by India Blakely’s 8 points, and took a 19-11 lead into halftime.
Throughout the season, the core of Niaira Jones, Blakely and Maori Davenport, has led the Trojans. When one isn’t producing the other two seem to have a knack in picking up the pieces. That was made clear on Wednesday morning. Davenport led the way in the first quarter with all eight points in the quarter. In quarters two and three, Blakely scored 14 points.
“It was great,” Jones said. “Every quarter someone would be scoring. It was great. The other people did shoot; they just didn’t go in. We had shots; it’s just that India’s and Maori’s went in.”
Blakely took control in the third quarter. The young freshman tallied six points and the Trojans took a 28-17 lead into the final frame.
The win for the Trojans gives them one more victory against a top-notch opponent. Jones hopes the wins will give the players confidence.
“I want them to have confidence heading into area play,” Jones said. “I want them to have confidence in those games leading into the area tournament. That’s what it’s all about.”
The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Hillcrest-Evergreen.
