Charles Henderson senior Lakin Tuner signed a scholarship on Friday morning to play softball at Enterprise State Community College next season.
“I am very excited,” Turner said. “It’s just a big relief knowing that I know where I am going. I don’t have to worry about that going into my senior season of softball anymore.”
Turner said the proximity to home and the players and coaches were big draws for ESCC.
“It’s close to home and it’s not too big to start off with,” Turner said. “When I went to try out there the coaches and all the girls were really open.”
Turner said the highlight of her day was the opportunity to share her signing ceremony with others.
“My travel ball coach, the one that really made all this happen was there,” Turner said. “My parents and all my family were there, knowing they were there to support me because I worked so hard for this.”
And she plans to keep working hard during the 2016 season.
“I am going to stay more focused and not be selfish and worrying about me,” Turner said. “I am the oldest on my team. I only have one other senior playing with me right now. I set the tone so I have to put the team on my back and go. I feel like that is going to help me going into my freshman year in college.”
Turner’s message to her teammates was anything but selfish.
“I told my teammates every day just push harder and never give up,” Turner said. “I was in a spot where I didn’t know that that’s what I wanted to do. I just kept working and working and I finally got an offer. If they are ever having a bad day I say look everybody has a bad day if you keep working one day you will get there. It’s not impossible.”
