The Pike County softball team improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating the Zion Chapel Rebels 6-0 in a rain-shortened, four-inning game Thursday night.
“I am extremely excited and humbled,” said Bulldogs head coach Fawn Sims. “(Zion Chapel) is a very well-coached team full of athletes. I told the girls after the game that was probably the most well-played defensive game and executed offensive game that I have seen them play since I got here.”
Brooke Bennett led the Bulldogs on the mound. The freshman threw all four innings giving up one hit and no runs. She struck out four batters and walked only three.
“Brooke pitched really solid,” Sims said. “She missed a few spots … but her few missed pitches worked out in our favor. The game was on her side of things today.”
The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when lone senior Laken Maulden reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring both Precious Vaznaian and Bennett.
After both teams went scoreless in the second, the Bulldogs added to their lead once after Vaznaian singled to begin the inning and scored on a triple by Bennett. A single by Maulden scored Bennett.
With the rain coming down and the thunder crackling in the distance, the Bulldogs closed out the scoring in the game’s final inning when Graci Williams reached on an error by the shortstop that scored both Nicole Holland and Beyonce Revels.
Vaznaian finished the game going 2-3, while Bennett went 2-2 and Maulken went 1-0 and also reached on an error.
The Bulldogs will be in action again on March 11 when they head to the PCA Tournament in Prattville.
