The Goshen Eagles used strong pitching to sweep the Pike County Bulldogs 4-3, 14-4 in a double header on Monday.
“It was really good,” said Eagles head coach Robby Kinsaul. “That is usually what happens when you get a performance like that on the mound. It was a great win for us.”
Landon Wilks struck out 18 batters in the first game, including striking out the side twice. He gave up only three runs on two hits, all of which occurred in the first inning.
“In his last outing he had trouble getting out of the first inning,” Kinsaul said. “You’re going to see that on every level. A lot of times pitchers struggle getting out of the first inning and figure things out. That is definitely what happened tonight.”
The Bulldogs’ Jahzarian Lampley led things off with a single and was followed up by a walk by Anfernee Feagin. Chris Maxwell singled, scoring Lampley. A pair of efforts scored Feagin and Maxwell.
The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Cory Peterson and Adam Turner led off the inning with a pair of walks. After Bailey Singleton reached first on a fielder’s choice, J.P Steele singled in Turner to get the Eagles on the board.
Steele began the third inning with a single and came around to score on a balk by Bulldogs’ starting pitcher Cameron Vance. The Eagles evened things up in the fourth inning when Jackson Kyzer scored on an error by the Bulldogs third baseman.
The fourth inning was the final inning for Bulldogs starter Vance. He went four innings allowing four runs on three this during the contest.
Hunter Kilpatrick came in the fifth inning and got out of the inning 1-2-3. The sixth inning would prove to be more difficult for the reliever. The Eagles got the offense going with a one-out walk by Jackson Kyzer. Wilks was able to reach base on an error by the second baseman. Peterson laced the ball down the left field line scoring Kyzer.
Peterson, Kyzer and Brock Snyder picked up hits for the Eagles while Lampley and Maxwell had the lone hits for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles dominated game. Dalton Bunch got the win for the Eagles by pitching four innings, allowing one run on just three hits and tallied eight strikeouts.
Taten Phillips picked up two hits to lead the Eagles, while Lampley and Rotten both picked up hits for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to take on New Brockton. Pike County will be in action this afternoon when they travel to play area opponent Zion Chapel before traveling to play Abbeville on April 7.
