A trio of three-run innings gave Kinston a 9-4 win over the Goshen Lady Eagles on Monday.
“I just think we have to hit the ball better,” said Eagles head coach Amy Warrick. “We out him them and I think we hit the ball well, we just couldn’t put the hits together. We left 10 runners on base and you can’t do that.”
Sydni Garrett got the start for the Eagles. The freshman threw all seven innings allowing nine runs on six hits.
“I thought she had a better game,” Warrick said. “We have to stop the walks. We can’t walk as many hitters. I thought she put too many pitches down the middle of the plate and Kinston is a good hitting team.”
Hannah Calhoun went 2-4 for the game with a run scored; Garrett was 3-4; Katlyn Gamble, 2-3; and Lydia Harrison, 2-4.
Kinston started the game with a triple in the first and by the time the inning came to a close they had a 3-0 lead over the Eagles.
The Eagles responded in the bottom of the first when they scored their first run of the game. Carmen Kelly grounded out to score Calhoun, who had reached on a leadoff triple.
The Eagles scored two more runs in the fourth inning to even the score at three runs a piece. Garrett led with a single and came round to score on a wild pitch and Calhoun tied up the score when she singled, scoring Warrick.
Kinston scored three runs in the top of the fifth to once again go up by three. The Eagles cut their deficit to 6-4 on a sacrifice fly by Warrick. The Eagles had an opportunity to get more, but they left two runners on base heading into the sixth inning.
Both teams got out of the sixth inning without a run scored, but Kinston scored three more runs in the seventh and took a 9-4 lead.
The Eagles got two runners on base in the inning but couldn’t get any more runs on the board.
The Eagles will be back in action this afternoon when they host Zion Chapel at 4:30 p.m.
