The Charles Henderson golf team advanced to the AHSAA Sub-State Tournament on Monday.
The boys’ team finished in the top four at the Timberline Golf Course in Calera.
“I am extremely proud of them,” said head coach Shelby Tuck. “They got out there and battled all day long.”
Lindsay Lee competed at the Arrowhead Golf Course in Montgomery, and secured a spot in the sub-state tournament after finishing fourth and competing in a sudden-death playoff.
“Lindsay is a fighter,” Tuck said. “She struggled on a hole and bounced back and still put a round together. She is to be complemented for that round. She had a nine on a hole and was able to bounce back and still be able to get back in the top four. That says a lot about her character.”
In Calera, eighth-grader Griffin McCrary led the way for the Trojans. He finished the round shooting an 86.
“He hit the ball extremely well off the tee,” Tuck said. “He hit the ball really well. He had two or three holes where he three-putted, but those greens were Augusta National fast. He did a good job at coming back to make puts he needed to make.”
Making the sub-state tournament is something the Trojans have been working for all season long. “We told the guys this is a new season and to go out and play and do your best,” Tuck said. “They went out with a great effort and accomplished that. They were really excited.”
The boy’s team will be hosting the sub-state tournament on Monday.
“It’s a blessing for us to be hosting it and now it’s more of a blessing for us to have a team in it,” Tuck said. “The guys should have a good comfort level knowing they will be playing at a course that they have been practicing at all year.”
Lee will take part in the individual sub-state tournament at the Montgomery Country Club on Monday.
“ I think she (Lindsay) is ready,” Tuck said. “She has been playing with the boys all year and I think that prepares her for this time of the year. She is comfortable knowing that she has been playing from the white tees with the boys and now from the red tees with the girls.”
From now until Monday the team will hit the course and work on the little things to prepare them for the tournament.
“We are going to keep doing what we have done all year,” Tuck said. “We are going to chip and put for about an hour and then we will play all nine holes. You don’t want to go out and there and just hit it. It’s about placement.”
Both rounds start at 8 a.m. Monday.
