After verbally committing to Wallace Community College in Dothan, Charles Henderson shortstop Nick Lewis made it official on Wednesday morning at a signing ceremony on the campus of Charles Henderson High School.

After knowing that he would spend the next two years in Dothan, it felt good for Lewis to make it official in front of the people that mean the most to him.

“It feels good to be able to get it out of the way,” Lewis said. “This was a big thing that I can now get off my chest. Now I can concentrate on playing ball. It feels great to do it in front of my teammates.”

One of the main draws to Dothan for Lewis was the closeness he felt with the coaching staff.

“Nick is obviously a very good baseball players, but he is a good kid too” said Wallace assistant coach Phillip Hurst. “We are very excited for him to come in and contribute next year.”

Lewis is having a standout senior season. He leads the team in hitting with a .475 batting average and has 45 RBIs. Lewis also makes contact; the senior has only stuck out eight times in 101 at bats.

“He has a lot of tools,” Hurst said. “The biggest thing that I liked when I watched him was his competitive nature. He is going to compete for all nine innings. He is going to give all he has to make sure his team wins the baseball game.”

First-year head coach William Teal is exited for Lewis and the opportunity to be able to coach him.

“It’s good knowing you had a guy sign,” Teal said. “It’s a exciting time for him. He is going to be able to go to the next level and compete, because we all know what kind of athlete he is. I think he is going to be very successful in that program.”

Lewis’s leadership on and off the field has impacted the Trojans throughout the last four years.

“He has been there and done that,” Teal said. “He doesn’t get rattled in certain circumstances. When he doesn’t have the best game, he doesn’t let it get to him. That rubs off; you have to have a guy like that. For him to play in the championship game in 2014, it helps carry this team knowing that they have a couple of guys that have been there and he is one of them.”

Lewis plans on carrying over his leadership and athletic qualities with him to Dothan.

“I want to be able to go in there and play my game,” Lewis said. “I want to take my game that I have hear and bump it up to another level when I get to college.”
