The Goshen Eagles’ season came to an end on Thursday afternoon when they fell to New Brockton and Zion Chapel in the Class 2A Area 5 tournament. The Eagles struggled against the Gamecocks in game one, falling 11-0 in game one. The Eagles had control of game two before the Rebels scored two runs in the seventh to end the game.

“We seemed flat today,” said Eagles head coach Amy Warrick. “We just couldn’t get anything going today. We took a hard loss to New Brockton. We couldn’t get the pitching or the hitting going.”

Eighth-grader Hannah Calhoun got the start for the Eagles in game one. Calhoun pitched the first three innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Sydni Garrett came in and pitched the last inning of the shortened game and allowed three runs on two hits.

The Eagles managed just one hit by senior second baseman Lexi Ellisor.

“They just out hit us,” Warrick said, “We had trouble finding the strike zone. Their batters could hit. Every time we put the ball off the plate they hit the ball.”

The Eagles came out in game two determined to extend their season.

Garrett got the start for the Eagles and pitched a complete ball game while allowing five runs on eight hits.

The Rebels got on the board first in the second inning when Billie Copeland stole home from third base.

The Eagles answered in the top of the third inning when they put three runs on the board. Kaitlin Gamble singled in Ellisor who reached base on an error. Both Gamble and Calhoun came around to score on an error by the centerfielder.

The Rebels answered with two runs of their won in the third inning when Haleigh Dewberry and Caroline Brown both scored on errors.

The Eagles stole the lead right back in the fourth inning when Calhoun singled in Kelsey Gibson, who pinch ran for Tessa Little.

The Eagles held on to the lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. Copeland started the offense with a one out walk and was followed up by a double by Ivey Amlong. Katie Qualls drove in the tying run on a single and Lexy Rugg ended the game on a double that scored Armlong.

“They battled and I was impressed,” Warrick said. “They played as a team and gave Zion Chapel a really good game.”
