Charles Henderson basketball kicked off its summer schedule Monday night at home against Northview. The varsity boys fell to Northview 51-24 before the Lady Trojans secured a 49-22 win.

After the Junior varsity Trojans began the night with a 29-23 loss the varsity boys struggled to get anything going in the middle game of the triple-header. The Trojans managed to score just nine-second half points and turnovers led to a lopsided win for Northview.

“It’s still early and this is something that we can fix,” said Trojans head coach Shelby Tuck. “We have to develop some good guard play. We have a lot of guards, but they’re not making the right decisions.”

The Trojans have a lot of time to fix their mistakes before the games tip off in the fall, and Tuck said they will use the remaining 21 days of the summer season to work on those mistakes.

“We have guys that haven’t seen the basketball court in a long time,” Tuck said. “I’m not big on excuses, but we will fix that. I would rather have this stuff going on now then come November.”

Tuck said the opportunity to see the players was invaluable on Monday.

“We are blessed with the opportunity to play these games,” Tuck said. “We know what we have to work on and we will fix it.”

Northview outscored the Trojans 22-9 in the second half, but Tuck saw no quit from his players.

“They had a lot of effort,” Tuck said. “They got in there and fought hard. It’s about making basketball plays and we didn’t make basketball plays. If we hang in there and make better decisions we will be fine.”

The Lady Trojans left no doubt in the final game of the evening. Playing for the fourth time of the day, the Trojans didn’t show much fatigue in the final game of the night.

“I think we were somewhat tired after playing all these games,” said Trojans head coach Dyneshia Jones. “After I set the first group down it kind of clicked with them, that I have to go out and play.”

Seven players scored in the ball game, but in the end it was the familiar faces of Niaira Jones, Maori Davenport and Tatyana Siler who stole the show.

“That means a lot,” Jones said. “It tells me what we need to work on this spring and it also tells me what we are doing good right now.

Davenport led the way with 14 points, while Siler and Jones finished with 10.

The Trojans will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Wilcox Central. The Lady Trojans will be back at home on Wednesday when they battle area foe Eufaula at 5.

“We need to work on the minor stuff like fundamentals,” Jones said. “I am seeing missed layups and not being able to look down court … They are still young and I need to drill into them what they need to do.”
