Brundidge City Manager Britt Thomas has been appointed the election manager for the August 2016 Municipal Elections. The appointment was made by Brundidge Mayor Jimmy Ramage at the council’s Tuesday meeting and was approved by the council.
The council also voted to contact the election officials from the most recent election to determine their interest and availability in serving as election officials for the August election. Any open slots will be considered at the council next meeting on July 19.
Thomas said a training session is planned for election officials in early August and will be held in conjunction with the training for the city of Troy election officials.
In other business, Council Member Margaret Ross, District 3, said she was unable to attend the “Take Back Our Park” event at Galloway Park on Saturday.
However, she visited the park prior to the Tuesday council meeting.
“There’s a lot of work that needs to be done up there to make the park a nice and safe place for children to play,” she said. “The tennis court has cracks in it and ball field needs work. We have a lot to do up there.”
Council Member Cynthia Pearson said she attended the event and recognized, too, that improvements need to be made to the park.
She cited bars missing from a piece of playground equipment and a tree trunk that remains inside the children’s play area and is a safety concern.
Annie Wood, a parent who attended the meeting, said the park needs improving so that it can be a safe place for children to play and an asset to the neighborhood.
“A lot of young parents with children are moving into the neighborhood and they need a nice, safe place for their children to play,” Woods said. “The park is in the neighborhood and it needs to be kept up.”
Thomas said efforts are being made to contact U.S. Rep. Martha Roby and ask for her assistance in getting the city’s go-ahead for the remediation of a park the city closed years ago.
The plans have been submitted to the Department of Interior for approval and the wait is nearly four years. The remediation of the closed park will include a walking trail, picnic tables and a gazebo at Ramage Park.
In other business, Thomas said the awning at Brundidge Florist has, once again, been hit by an 18-wheeler attempting to make a right-hand turn off S.A. Graham Boulevard.
The council discussed what might steps might be taken to stop 18-wheelers from making turns onto and off of Main Street
The Brundidge City Council meets at 4 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Brundidge City Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
