Flake Joiner Tatom

Mrs. Flake Joiner Tatom, age 91 of Banks died Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at her home. Mrs. Tatom was born April 4, 1925 in the Ebenezer community to the late William Flake “Mr. Buck” Joiner, Sr., and the late Gussie Culpepper Joiner. Flake was the first drum majorette in the history of the Troy High School band which was directed by Mr. Herman Moll. She attended State Teachers College in Troy and received her BS degree in Secondary Education in English and Social Studies in 1947.  She was also the pianist for the Troy college ensemble and choir. During her time at State Teachers College  she was listed in Who’s Who among students in American Universities and Colleges 1946-1947.   She later received her Master’s Degree from Troy State University. A lifelong educator, she taught in some capacity for over 50 years, retiring from the Troy City School system after 28 years of service. During the time she was with the Troy City School system she was a volunteer for the Pike County 4H program and an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma teacher’s sorority. After her retirement she worked with Troy University as a supervisor over their elementary school interns until she retired again at the age of 76. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 15, 2016 at 11:30 AM in the chapel of Green Hills Funeral Home with Dr. Malone Chandler officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hills Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, July 15, 2016 from 10:30 until 11:30AM at the funeral home. Survivors include; children, Mike (Connie R.) Tatom, Banks, William Mark Tatom ,Troy, Barbara Flake Tatom, Banks, granddaughter, Lauren (Peter) McLemore of Dauphin Island, Al., great grandchildren, Bryce McLemore and Kyndall Leigh McLemore, her brother, William Flake “Sonny” Joiner ,Jr., Gadsden, nieces, Susan Elizabeth Joiner of Indianapolis, Mary Joiner Hunt of Gadsden, Nephews, Walter Hinz of Boynton Beach, Fl., and Tommy Tatom of Luverne.  Pallbearers will be Tommy Haisten, Tommy Tatom, H.R. Theriot, Robert Dunn, Dick Barnett and Henry Barnett.  Honorary pallbearers will be her former and present caregivers, Mary Dean (Jimmy Lee) Carlisle, Jewel Townsend, Jean Thompson and Patricia Morris. In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to the Parkinson’s Research Program at UAB Hospital, 1720 7th Avenue S. Birmingham, Al. 35233.  The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Tatom Family.
