The Jamey Johnson Homecoming Golf Tournament and Concert is set for Sunday at the Cottonwood Golf Course in Montgomery.
The fundraising event is hosted by the country music recording artist in his hometown. The all day event features golf and also music by Johnson and friends. All proceeds benefit The Nikki Mitchell Foundation.
Ed Whatley, Alabama Development Coordinator for the event, said The Nikki Mitchell Foundation was conceived in the final stages of Mitchell’s battle with pancreatic cancer.
“Nikki was the president of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter’s company for 22 years,” Whatley said. “After a long battle with cancer, she left her wishes to several friends to carry out.”
The Nikki Mitchell Foundation started the month after Mitchell’s death in 2013 and has been active and growing since.
“As a friend of the late Waylon Jennings and of Nikki Mitchell, Johnson is willing to lend his name to the annual homecoming concert that benefits the Nikki Mitchell Foundation.
This will be the fifth annual Jamey Johnson Homecoming Golf Tournament and Concert and will also feature Johnson with Randy Houser, Jerrod Niemann, Down Home Boys, Dallas Davidson, Donica Knight and friends.
Whatley said the first year of the fundraiser about 1,000 people attended. The other events increased in number and were jam-packed in 2014 and 2015.
“The tournament attracts a lot of celebrity golf guests and the outdoor concert that follows is always packed,” Whatley said. “Both the golf tournament and the concert are held in an effort to raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer and to support the Marines’ Toys for Tots program.”
The Jamey Johnson Homecoming Concert is Sunday, October 9 and gates open at 4 p.m. The concert begins at 5 p.m. Jamey Johnson goes on at 8:30 p.m.
Admission to the concert is $20 or $10 with a new toy donation in support of the U.S. Marine’s Toys for Tots program. Grammy nominee Johnson served in the Marine Corps and is a strong supporter of Toys for Tots.
The Cottonwood Golf Course is located at 7160 Bryon Nelson Blvd. in Montgomery.
