Homecoming brings weekend festivities

The Troy Trojans football team will face Georgia State on Saturday, but the game isn’t the only homecoming event this weekend.
Kane and the Saints will be coming to Troy this Friday to perform a free concert on the Square in conjunction with Troy University’s homecoming week.
Lead singer Kane Meredith is a Troy native, graduating from Charles Henderson High School and Troy University.
“We chose Kane and the Saints for two main reasons,” said Leigh Anne Windham, director of community services for the City of Troy. “They’re very popular with the college students and they have ties to the local community. We think they’ll bring out the community and college students.”
The concert will be held on the downtown square from 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday.
The Square will be active again on Saturday morning for the annual homecoming parade hosted by the Pike County Chamber of Commerce (PCCOC) in conjunction with the Troy SGA and the Homecoming Committee.
More than 90 units have been filled for the parade, and residents who wish to join that number still have until noon on Thursday to register.
“This is a longstanding tradition in the community,” said Kathy Sauer, president of the PCCOC. “It’s been a part of our culture for a long, long time. This is the time that Troy and the surrounding area shows its appreciation to Troy University for what they mean to us and what they do. It also incorporates homecoming so it really blends the city and the university, which makes it even better.”
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Elm Street and will proceed to Three Notch Street where it will turn left, ending at Madison Street.
The parade will include all kinds of groups and floats. Community groups, businesses, fraternities and sororities, clubs and organizations are just a few of the kinds of groups that are participating. Everyone can be involved whether on a professional float, a homemade float, or even just walking.
The Trojans are set to play Georgia State at 2 p.m. The homecoming court will be introduced before the game and the queen will be announced at halftime.
