The Pike County Lady Bulldogs closed out play in the Straughn Thanksgiving Tournament on Tuesday with a pair of losses to both Straughn 43-25 and Andalusia 51-39.

The two losses for the Bulldogs on Tuesday brings their record to 0-3 on the season, but they were able to get in some experience before returning to action on December 6.

“We are so incredibly young,” said head coach Todd Reynolds. “The reason why I entered this tournament was to get a leg up on getting experience. If I didn’t get that tournament in we wouldn’t have started until December 6. I wanted to get reps early, and now I can use the next week and half to focus on the areas of weakness.”

In the morning session against Straughn, the Bulldogs battled in the early portion of the game and entered the second quarter tied at seven. After entering halftime with an eight-point lead, Straughn was able to ride the wave to a win.

Keeyah Rodgers led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points, while Precious Vaznaian contributed with five points.

In game two, the Bulldogs fell behind by 10 points early in the game and could never recover.

“We battled hard against Andalusia,” Reynolds said. “If we didn’t spot them 10 points in the first quarter we could have won because we hung with them the rest of the way. They were playing really aggressive, but what I loved about that game was that if forced some of my players to grow up. They battled hard the rest of the game.”

The Bulldogs dwindled their deficit to eight points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t draw any closer.

Vaznaian scored a game high 23 points in the loss, while Rodgers had five.

“I set goals at the beginning of the season and I think they are goals that can be reached,” Reynolds said. “We probably could have stole one or two games, but being so young you need these games to figure who can do what.”
