Patsye Ruth Harris Lucas

Mrs. Patsye Ruth Harris Lucas, age 92, peacefully went home to be with her Lord early Wednesday morning, March 29, 2017, at Lake Haven Assisted Living Facility in Luverne, Alabama.

Mrs. Lucas was born on February 26, 1925, as the youngest child of John Wilson Harris and Ida Bell McLeod Harris in the Youngblood Community of Pike County. She was a graduate of Shellhorn High School and Troy State College. She taught elementary school at Shellhorn Elementary School for over 35 years. After her retirement from the Pike County School System in 1985, she taught at Covenant Christian School for three years.

Mrs. Lucas was a multi-talented Christian lady. Not only did she teach school, she taught various Sunday school and Bible study classes. She was an excellent cook and an outstanding gardener. She hand painted china, wrote poetry, and was an avid genealogist, having authored and published numerous genealogy books. In the past, as a very active member of the Pike County Historical Genealogical Society, she was instrumental in numerous projects being completed. She was a charter member of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.

Mrs. Lucas was preceeded in death by her husband, Charles Hubert Lucas Sr.; her son, Charles Hubert Lucas Jr.; her granddaughter, Shannon Cecelia Marie Lucas; her parents and her sisters and brothers.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Sydney Susan Lucas Durden and Jerry Michael Durden of Montgomery; her son and daughter-in-law, Patrick Harris Lucas Sr. and Cynthia Marie Stephens Lucas of Troy; her daughter-in-law, Janice Marie Kelley Lucas of Troy; her grandchildren: Lucas Garrett (Candace) Durden of Warrenton, VA, Whitney Michele Durden of Wetumpka, Kelley Ruth Lucas (Jake) Barron of Troy, Patricia Marianne Lucas (Michael) Beard of Troy, and Patrick Harris (Laura) Lucas, II of Troy; her great-grandchildren: Avery Grace Durden, Trent Garrett Durden , and Lainey Faith Durden of Warrenton, VA; Henry Wyatt Howell and Cody James Howell of Wetumpka; Ava Hannelore Beard, Eric Patrick Beard, Charli Grace Barron, Catherine Jean “Cate” Barron, Caden Joseph Penn, and Shannon Yvonne Lucas all of Troy; Matthew Lucas Barron of Luverne; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted and memorials may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Old Lebanon Baptist Church, and the Pike County Historical Genealogical Society.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Lucas will be held, Saturday, April 1st, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Troy with Rev. Perry Green officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service form 12 – 1:50 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Dillard Funeral Home of Troy directing.

Pallbearers will be Michael Beard, Jake Barron, Lucas Durden, Ben Fleming, John Nunnelee, and Patrick Lucas Jr.
