Warm sunshine, a soft breeze and a sprinkle of rain have brought about the right conditions for Spring Plantin’ Saturday at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama.

Kari Barley, museum director, said the museum staff will put the plow in the ground, figuratively speaking, at 9 a.m. Saturday and the public is invited to participate in this annual rite of spring.

“We have a full day of old-time family fun and activities planned for Spring Plantin’ 2017,” Barley said. “Of course, spring planting will be our main event with our staff planting the museum’s spring garden. The children will get in on the planting, except they will get to take their plant home to care for as it grows over the summer.”

Sausage will be smoking in the smokehouse Saturday and visitors will have the opportunity to sample country smoked sausage right from the smokehouse.

“At the demonstration cabin, our volunteers will be frying cornbread on the woodstove and churning butter in an old crock churn for visitors to sample,” Barley said.

A full slate of fun games has been planned for the kids and their kin.

Most kids haven’t heard of whinididdles and whirligigs but, on Saturday, they will have fun with both, Barley said.

“We’ll have Jacob’s Ladders and ‘hoops and sticks’ for them to try and a lot of other games that children used to play,” she said. “The games will be fun for all ages, to play or to watch.”

Across the covered bridge and in the Log Church, the Rev. Ed Shirley will be singing the favorite old hymns. Visitors will be invited to join in or just sit and listen.

Those who would like to bring a picnic lunch can  “make a day of it” and that’s the best way to enjoy Spring Plantin’ at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama.

A special attraction of Spring Plantin’ is the Pike County Master Gardeners Spring Plant Sale from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The master gardeners will have a variety of plants for indoors and outdoors. Admission to the plant sale is free and the prices are great.

Spring Plantin’ will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Admission is $10. Children ages five and under are admitted free.
