The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at Charles Henderson High School are setting out to make Friday night a very special memory for people with special needs.

The club is holding their first ever “Winter Ball” for people from around the region that have cognitive or physical challenges.

“We actually saw something on social media similar to this and that’s how we got the idea,” said Gavin Barnes, one of the FBLA students. “Some personal stuff we had been going through at school involving special needs students made us decide to offer them an opportunity to get them involved. They don’t really get opportunities like this.”

The group will honor 26 distinguished guests at the ball and the club is prepared to pull out all the stops, including offering valet parking, announcing their entries with a formal lead-out, crowns and corsages for the ladies and boutonnieres for the gentlemen.

“We’re trying to make them feel like kings and queens,” Barnes said.

The event was offered to people ages 16 and up with, and FBLA advisor Jennifer Sanders said they have an age range that reaches up near 60 years old.

The dance will feature heavy refreshments, a DJ, and the crowning of a king and queen by Miss Troy Kayla Mitchell.

The dance will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the CHHS cafetorium with the lead-out at 4:45 p.m.
