GROWING TOGETHER: Seniors learn about nutrition, gardening

Seniors at the Troy Senior Nutrition Center learned a bit about nutrition and gardening Wednesday thanks to the Troy University Office of Civic Engagement.
“I think that everyone has this innate desire to get outside and play in the dirt, even if we want to hide it when we get older,” said Avery Livingston, coordinator. “It’s a great opportunity for fellowship and hands–on learning.”
Livingston said the main goal is to teach seniors about nutrition and gardening and also giving them a communal time together.
“Once everyone got their hands dirty and started planting, they all started laughing and having a great time,” Livingston said. “Some were pros but some had never planted before. We were dealing with very different skill levels and I think that’s great.”
The seniors planted two types of kale, beets and radishes. The program is held once every Tuesday at the center, but Livingston said the garden gives the seniors a way to continue the practice even once the lessons are over.
The program concludes in spring, but Livingston said the plan is to keep the garden as part of the office’s “community gardens” program and check on it from time to time. Other garden locations include the Colley Senior Complex, Troy Elementary School and the Boys and Girls Club.
