The City of Troy will host its first ever Cruise-In car show Saturday, and local “motorheads” are excited about the new event.

Greg Herring, who relocated to Troy from Texas, said he is excited to be entering his 1978 Chevrolet Corvette L82 into the show.

“It is my first time being in a car show in Troy,” Herring said. “The downtown square is a great place to be, and I have a classic Corvette that I like to show.”

Leigh Anne Windham, director of community engagement and special projects for the City of Troy, said the event is a perfect fit for downtown.

“We have been looking at having this type of event in downtown and decided that now is the perfect time,” Windham said. “We have marketed the event to area car clubs and expect participants from Pike and surrounding counties.”

Herring said car shows can be a great opportunity for people to gather and reminisce on old times.

“It’s a very nostalgic thing for me,” Herring said. “People will walk up and say ‘Oh, you know, my dad had one just like that,’ or, ‘my uncle had this,’ or, ‘my parents drove me to school in a car just like that.’”

Dudley Dow, of Brundidge, is entering his 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS and agreed that the Cruise-In will be great for his fellow car enthusiasts.

“I’m a motorhead,” Dow said. “I like anything related to cars or that’ll be a gathering of motorheads, because that’s what it’s all about.”

Dow has been in hundreds of car shows in his lifetime. So many that he says he “wouldn’t want to guess” an exact number.

Since moving to Pike County about 10 years ago, Dow has participated in other local car shows.

He says he’s glad that the City has started the Cruise-In because it gives himself and other “motorheads” something to do.

“Come downtown and enjoy checking out all of the vehicles and visiting with their owners,” Windham said.

Participants from Troy, Ozark, Brundidge, Grady, Montgomery and Salem have entered cars into the show already.

The show will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot next to Byrd Drug Co. Participants are invited to enter vehicles of any year, make or model. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with about 30 entries expected.

Local musician Lenny Trawick will perform during the show.
