A Troy police officer, along with a K-9 unit, walked along John M. Long Avenue near Hawkins Hall Monday evening toward a black rolling briefcase sitting on the sidewalk. The dog sniffed the case before the officer delicately opened the container – then he gave a thumbs up to two other officers cordoning off the section of road.

As it turns out, the briefcase was not an explosive device. It was merely a briefcase that had been left on the sidewalk.

Clif Lusk, University Relations coordinator, said that no threat was made about a bomb on the campus.

“The University police responded to a suspicious case that turned out to be a large briefcase,” Lusk said. “There’ wasn’t anything to it. Somebody called the campus police about a suspicious package and the decided it warranted going through the proper procedures. It was a precautionary measure.”

The police responded to the suspicious case just before 6 p.m. and were quickly able to confirm that the scene was safe.
