After three months of tending to the soil, planting and growing Sudan grass then mowing out a trail, the “Alabama Maze” will be open for business on Saturday at Butter and Egg Adventures.
Owners Ron and Susan Peirce got the idea to grow a maze after visiting one in Washington.
“We wanted to do something different and do something that the whole family would have fun with,” Ron said. “This was a new way to bring people in and decided to give it a try. Every section is different in its own way and can be short or long.”
The maze is crafted to lead to 13 different cities in Alabama, but guests have to answer a question about the city to be led down the right trail. Ron said that he pulled most of the questions out of a fourth-grade history book.
“The trail is not too complicated at all,” Ron said. “Even if you go down the wrong path, you will easily find your way back.”
The grass has grown up as high as 13 feet in some places and the trails total just under a half-mile.
“If people take their time during the maze and really soak in each city it can take up to 45-minutes to complete the whole thing,” Ron said. “This will be a family fun and learning environment that Susan and I are very excited for.”
The maze will be open on Saturdays and Sundays through October 30. Special events will be held during that time as well, including “flashlight nights,” school field trips and even a zombie hunt at the end of October.
“We are looking forward to seeing all the work that has been put into it come to life,” Ron said. “It has been really fun watching the grass come up and grow…it can get higher than the 13 feet it is now. We don’t have any plans for next year and just want to see how it goes this year.”
The official ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 15. Free funnel cakes, drinks and hotdogs will be at the grand opening and there is a $7 admission fee to walk the maze, which includes other recreational activities.
