When it comes to Troy wide receivers, names like Deondre Douglas, Sidney Davis and Damion Willis grab a lot of the attention. Now sophomore Tray Eafford could become a better-known name after hauling in a perfect 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kaleb Barker to put the Trojans up 14-0 early in their win over Georgia State.

Last season as a freshman, Eafford caught five receptions go for 40 yards or more, three of which went for a touchdown. So far this season, the sophomore has 16 catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

With his ability to make big plays, Eafford has been named Troy’s secret weapon.

“That’s what they call me. I guess because they bring me in for the deep route,” Eafford said. “A lot of people probably don’t know I can run; but as you can see, I can do a little something every now and then. They use me every now and then. Like I said, if they call my number I am going to do it.”

Eafford has been working on the art of the big play during practice and it paid off on Saturday with his second touchdown of the season.

“It’s been something we have been practicing since the first day of practice,” Eafford said. “Coach told me and handed me some plays. It was something I perfected during practice. He told me how to read the DB leverage. If he is inside, I’m going to get him over the top, if he is outside beat him in the middle. So I just did that.”

Barker got hit as he was throwing the ball down to Eafford, who had a few steps on Georgia State’s Quavian White and Remy Lazarus.

“Kaleb actually threw that ball pretty good,” Eafford said. “He said somebody was in his face. Wherever he threw it, I had to go get it. I couldn’t miss an opportunity.”
